Musical intro by J.K. Langford, "the river, the prayer" (clarinet).
Questions of transnational and cross-community solidarities have been explored and discussed by marginalised and oppressed communities time and again throughout history. The relevance of addressing the issue, navigating ambiguities and multivalences as well as contradictions and contentions herein, has by no means subsided; rather, the need to traverse and collectively review forms of and approaches to solidarity continually, has again been made urgently evident.
In our closing panel we will ask: How can a relational view of different current and historical experiences of systematic injustice and violence and moments of (shared) resistance to these, facilitate reflections on transnational and cross-community structures of solidarity today? What challenges and pitfalls must we be wary of in this context? How does the relationship between power, empathy and solidarity affect our communal practices, and what is meant by putting “care before love”?
