The assault by the Israeli army has commenced in Rafah, where 1.5 million displaced individuals sought shelter from bombings. Among them are 600,000 children, forced from their homes and residing in cramped tents lacking adequate provisions. Now, they face renewed attacks and displacement by the IDF.
In the first months of the IDF attacks in Gaza, we as students of TU Berlin came to- gether to express our horror at the killing by the Israeli army in Gaza and Germany‘s complicity as the second largest supplier of weapons to Israel. We protested at the university to draw attention to the fact that this is a genocide against the Palestinian people. In recent weeks, we have seen clearly that we are not alone in this. Students in various countries have organized protests at their universities to demand an end to the genocide and occupation. We continue to demand that the German government advocate for an immediate ceasefire and that our university join us in pressuring the government.
Instead of criticizing the complicity of the (US and German) governments, which sends weapons to Israel and have rejected the demand for a ceasefire, student protests are being criminalized in Germany and worldwide. The so-called Free University of Berlin exposes peacefully protesting students to brutal violence and criminal charges by the German police.
Joe Biden, Kai Wegner, and Günter M. Ziegler (President of FU) accuse the protesters of violence and disruption of university operations. But where is the outrage that the IDF has bombed every single university in Gaza and made academic operations im- possible?
As if that weren‘t enough, the Berlin Senate wants to introduce a new law that would empower Berlin universities to forcibly expel students against their will. This measure could then be applied to any form of political activism on campus.
