Hunderte von Stoffähnchen, versehen mit Namen und Alter der Kinder, flatterten an der Kottbusser Brücke im Wind.

Eine ähnliche Installation fand schon im Sommer 2015 statt, ebenfalls an der Kottbusser Brücke.

Offensichtlich hat sich das politische Klima in der deutschen Hauptstadt seit damals verändert – verschlechtert, um präzise zu sein: Während die Installation 2015 mehrere Wochen am Brückengeländer der Kottbusser Brücke hing, Menschen sich über den Sommer 2014 in Gaza informieren konnten und wollten, wurde die Installation 2019 bereits nach wenigen Stunden wohl von der Polizei entfernt. Es scheint, als würde versucht zu vertuschen, dass die Auslöschung von hunderten von Leben palästinensischer Kinder und Jugendlicher mit dem Versäumnis von Drittstaaten – in diesem Fall der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – zu tun hat, die ihren Verpflichtungen nicht nachkommen, Israel für seine Völker- und Menschenrechtsverletzungen zur Verantwortung zu ziehen.

Auf einer Hinweistafel wird an die Anzeige in der NewYorkTimes (NYT) erinnert, in der über 350 Überlebende und Nachkommen von Überlebenden des Nazi-Völkermords Israels Überfall auf Gaza verurteilen:

Activists* in Berlin have commemorated hundreds of Palestinian children and adolescents whose lives were obliterated by Israeli forces during Israel’s attack on Gaza in summer 2014 and during the protests at the Great March of Return.

Hundreds of little flags with names and age of the children fluttered in the wind at the Kottbusser Bridge.

A similar commemoration was held in summer 2015, also at the Kottbusser bridge.

Obviously, the political climate in the German capital has changed since then  – worsened to be precise: While in 2015 the installation hung for several weeks on the railings of the Kottbusser bridge…in 2019 the installation was removed after only a few hours, probably by the police. It seems as if an attempt is being made to cover up the fact that the extinction of hundreds of lives of Palestinian children and adolescents has to do with the failure of third countries – in this case, the Federal Republic of Germany – to comply with their obligation to hold Israel to account for its violations of international law and human rights law.

Die Ausstellung feiert den 70. Jahrestag der Gründung des jüdischen Staates auf einem Land, das seit Generationen von einheimischen Palästinensern bewohnt wurde. Überall versucht sie, die Wahrnehmung der Besucher von Geschehnissen rund um dieses schicksalhafte Ereignis zu verzerren und zu manipulieren.

Wir präsentieren hier einen kritischen Begleiter zu dieser Ausstellung. Unsere Kommentare wurden gründlich recherchiert; wir zitieren Originaldokumente (Knesset-Reden, Papiere aus dem israelischen Militärarchiv, britische und französische Kabinettpapiere, Dokumente der Vereinten Nationen usw.) sowie Analysen aus zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Quellen, die von hoch angesehenen Universitäten veröffentlicht wurden.

Besonders bestürzend finden wir, dass diese Ausstellung Schülern gezeigt werden soll, die gerade dabei sind, Fakten von Fiktion unterscheiden zu lernen. Die Landschaftsaufnahmen widmen sich dem Thema Wasser und Trockenheit in Israel, den palästinensischen Gebieten und Jordanien. Zitate aus der Bibel, dem Koran und dem Talmud, die ebenfalls von Wasser oder Trockenheit handeln, ergänzen die Fotomotive und unterstreichen die Intention des Fotografen, das Gemeinsame und Verbindende in den drei Religionen aufzuspüren.

Das Projekt basiert auf einer Kooperation mit dem Fine Arts Department der Al Quds Universität Abu Dis. Unter dem Titel „Places and Spaces“ fanden bereits Kunstaktionen in Krakau (Polen 2015, in Zusammenarbeit mit der Kunstakademie Krakau) und in Stellenbosch (Südafrika 2015, in Kooperation mit dem Visual Art Department der
Stellenbosch Uni) statt.

Die Ausstellung wird in Bonn-Tannenbusch gezeigt, einem Stadtteil, der wie das Land Palästina einen besonderen
„Status“ hat.

In 2002, several queers set up a camp under a highway bridge in Tel Aviv, just a few hundred meters from the huge Gay Parade taking place at the same time. They were equipped with a sound system, DIY art, glitter, and a banner reading “Mi she mekabel jehol lehitkabel“ (Hebrew: He who accepts will be accepted). The party under the bridge grew rapidly and marked the beginning of a queer movement that until 2009 organised parties at different places in Jaffa/Tel Aviv: Queerhana.
The name derives from a wordplay combining “Karachana” (Hebrew: “wild party”, Arabic: “brothel”) and “queer”.
Inspired by Hakim Bey’s concept of a “Temporary Autonomous Zone” (1991), Queerhana created free spaces in a society shaped by war and racism that were at once safe spaces and sites of political activity, where deviation from social norms, gender ambiguity, and opposition against the Israeli occupation policy could be expressed in a self-confident and creative way. The movement offered Jewish and Palestinian queers a political and social home, something which they were not able to find in Israel’s mainstream gay scene.
The exhibition THIS IS A FREE ZONE documents the origin and development of Queerhana in the context of other autonomous movements in Israel/Palestine from 2001 to 2009. 15 years later, the project takes a look back and raises questions regarding the connection of party and politics: (How) can one dance during war? What is necessary for creating a common space for Palestinian and Jewish-Israeli queers? Can a “safe space” be created without repeating the same excluding power relations and dichotomies that the zone actually seeks to overcome?
Based on these questions, the project searches for inspiration for the present.

Accompanying the exhibition the book „QUEERHANA. UTOPIA NOW!“ (ISBN 978-3-938515-66-2) with documentation materials and essays and the documentary film „Nation Monsters and Superqueers“ with testimonies of queer activists from Israel/Palestine will be released.

Über 1.8 Millionen Menschen sind seit 10 Jahren in Gaza eingeschlossen – auf einer Fläche, die dem Kanton Schaffhausen entspricht. Das tägliche Leben in einem der am dichtesten besiedelten Gebiete der Welt ist geprägt von Stromausfällen, von Mangel an sauberem Trinkwasser und medizinischer Versorgung. Es herrschen Arbeitslosigkeit und grosse Armut. Dennoch kämpfen die Palästinenser*innen in Gaza unentwegt für ein Leben in Würde.

Die Blockade Gazas ist eine Kollektivstrafe der gesamten Bevölkerung, wie sie von den Genfer Konventionen verboten wird, und muss sofort beendet werden. Auch die Schweiz steht als Depositärstaat der Genfer Konventionen in der Verantwortung.

Vom 11.–20. Mai 2017 organisiert das Forum für Menschenrechte in Israel / Palästina während 10 Tagen Veranstaltungen und Aktivitäten, um über das Leben unter der Blockade zu informieren und Möglichkeiten aufzeigen, wie wir uns für die Rechte der Palästinenser*innen einsetzen können.
